More than a tea – ayurvedics

Ayurveda is an ancient practice that has its history in the Indian subcontinent. This can include all kinds of lifestyle changes; yoga, meditation, massage and mindful eating, often including ayurvedic teas, or blends.

Simply translated as ‘science of life’ it really focuses on how to live according to your unique and individual constitutional make-up. There are three constitutions known as dosha: vata, pitta and kapha and for health these need to be balanced.  Every individual has all three, but it is the dominance of any one, two, or all three that makes up a person’s individual constitution or Prakriti.

Ayurvedic teas/blends have been specially blended to harmonise the three dosha and can be a wonderful healing tonic.

Vata teas

Vata relates to the nervous system.  If it is out of balance. Vata teas include ingredients with calming properties, include chamomile, cardamom, fennel, and marshmallow root. These plant constituents are soothing. Ashwagandha is another popular herb that is used in different ayurvedic blends.

Pitta Teas

Pitta relates to metabolism and hormones. Good choices for pitta teas are cooling blends ofpeppermint, licorice and rose to help balance fiery pitta energy. Other blends for this type aim to manage excess body heat and contain herbs such as saffron, cardamom and fennel.

Kapha Teas

Kapha is associated with the structure of the body.  Kapha teas are spicy and warming and may contain a blend of cinnamon, cardamom and licorice to uplift the body and mind. Ideal for stimulating sluggish kapha energy. Other great blends to for the body may include green tea, cloves and black pepper.

Many of these teas are also designed to be used as part of a detoxification programme. Look for those including ginger, orange peel, turmeric, aloe vera and fennel which are often taken to help to support digestive health too.
