A paper reported in Osteoporosis International (April 2021) has shown that many people who present with hip fracture in hospital have low blood levels of vitamin D. Those with low vitamin D levels not only had more delirium, but had more medical remissions within 30 days of them leaving hospital.
This shows just how important it is for those who are at risk of fractures, whether through older age or brittle bones, to maintain good body levels. Public Health England encourage all who spend a lot of time indoors to supplement with 10micrograms daily, although up to 75micrograms daily is regarded as safe for those who are self-supplementing (and practitioners and G.Ps might recommend more).
